Last updated on February 22, 2021

Kombucha, it’s that wildly bubbly, natural effervescent, mouth watering tonic elixir that’s good for your belly

For the last two decades it’s been gaining popularity around the world.

The downside of buying a fizzy bottle of kombucha everyday is the price which can quickly add up.  Costing around $3.00 to sometimes $4.00 per bottle. Even when it’s on sale it still costs $2.50 plus per bottle.

But why buy it when you can make it by the gallon for a fraction of the cost (around 25 cents a gallon),

How To Make Kombucha At Home For Cheap

This is a basic recipe that will make 1 gallon.

Supplies Needed

  • 1 cup of organic cane sugar
  • 5 bags of black tea or 2 tablespoons of loose leaf black tea (about 10 grams).
  • 1 Kombucha SCOBY Culture (you can buy one here)
  • 1 cup of starter liquid (draw from top of the previous batch
  • 1 Gallon of Purified (Not from the tap)
  • A pot to boil water
  • A brewing vessel – Glass is best but (never use plastic)
  • A cloth cover (to keep fruit flies out)
  • A rubber band

Next, Make Your Sweet Tea Concentrate

This is the stuff that will feed your mother culture and turn into delicious Kombucha Tea:

  1. Bring 4 cups of water to a rapid boil.
  2. Mix the hot water & tea bags to your 1 gallon brewing vessel.
  3. Let steep for atleast 15-20 minutes.
  4. Remove the tea bags.
  5. Add your cup of sugar and stir it until it dissolves.
  6. Then fill your gallon vessel up with cold water
  7. Wait until the tea and water in the vessel is room temperature and then add your SCOBY (this is important because very hot water will kill your SCOBY).
  8. Cover the top with a thick cloth and wrap a rubber band around it to secure it.

Set it and forget it

  1. Find a place in the kitchen or in a cupboard with a temperature between 70 – 80 degrees where your kombucha can brew for 10 days or so.
  2. If you like your kombucha a little sweet then this should be enough time.
  3. If you like it stronger then allow it to brew for another week or so.
  4. Enjoy!
